This year marks 35 years since those cold January days of 1991, when the Soviet army attacked the institutions of the Republic of Lithuania, as well as communication, media, and other facilities of the newly independent country. Thousands of unarmed citizens of the country took part in their defense; hundreds were injured, and 14 defenders lost their lives.
Thanks to the courage, dedication, and unity of the defenders of independence, Lithuania’s freedom was ultimately achieved. To commemorate this occasion, the following events are planned this year near the Vilnius TV Tower:
♦ On January 9, from 12:00 to 16:00, a traditional gathering of tower defenders and veterans will take place at the TV Tower. Students from the Karoliniskes Music School will perform for them. (The event is free of charge).
♦ On January 10, from 12:00 to 14:00, the mass run “Path of Life and Death” will finish at the foot of the Vilnius TV Tower.
♦ On January 12, at 18:00, there will be a bonfire lighting ceremony, which will also involve the highest-ranking officials of the country paying tribute to the defenders of the TV Tower.
♦ On January 13 from 16:00, on the slope near the large metal cross and on the tower, a laser art light installation “Way of the Cross: Symbols of Remembrance of January 13” will be performed.
♦ On January 12-13, the TV tower will be illuminated in the colors of the Lithuanian flag.
